teaching and learning

Junior School Curriculum

Specialist teaching from the earliest years, a strong STEAM strand and plenty of hands-on learning, building confident, capable pupils ready for their next step.

Our Vision

expertise, ambition and high expectations

At Kneller Hall Junior, learning is shaped by expertise, ambition and high expectations. Our teachers create an environment where pupils are challenged, supported and encouraged to think independently. The result is more than strong academic outcomes; it is confident, capable young people who are equipped to embrace the next stage of their education.

This foundation is built through a broad and balanced curriculum, where academic rigour sits alongside creativity, sport and personal development. Every child is encouraged to build on their strengths, develop resilience and take ownership of their learning, gaining the knowledge, character and confidence to thrive in senior school and beyond.

“They build confidence and create a space where all abilities and different talents are celebrated.”

A Broad and Balanced Curriculum for Every Stage of their journey

learning with ambition

Our broad and balanced curriculum inspires, stretches and challenges every child, with the individual attention and support they need to thrive. Small class sizes allow our teachers to recognise each pupil’s strengths, understand how they learn and provide the right level of challenge to help them progress.

Children are encouraged to ask questions, explore ideas and see mistakes as part of the learning process. Through this approach, they develop a deeper understanding of their subjects and a positive attitude towards new challenges.

Learning extends beyond the classroom. From Reception, specialist teaching, practical experiences, creative projects and educational visits broaden pupils’ horizons, deepen their knowledge and give them opportunities to discover new interests, make connections and develop their talents.

STEAM and Innovation

Taught by a specialist teacher, STEAM encourages pupils to think creatively, experiment, collaborate and turn ideas into reality. Using contemporary tools such as 3D design software alongside traditional making and design techniques, pupils develop their problem-solving skills and learn to approach challenges from different perspectives.

Clubs such as Freemaker give pupils the freedom to explore their own design concepts, experiment with new ideas and bring their creations to life.

Creative and Performing Arts

Music, art and drama are integral to our curriculum, giving every child the opportunity to express themselves, develop their talents and build confidence through creativity and performance.

From exploring artistic techniques to performing on stage and making music together, pupils develop their skills, collaborate with others and learn to communicate their ideas with confidence. Through these experiences, they discover new ways to express themselves and develop a lasting appreciation for the arts.

Sport and Physical Education

Physical activity and sport play a central role in life at Kneller Hall Junior. Our programme develops teamwork, leadership, resilience and a lasting enjoyment of being active.

Through specialist PE and Games teaching, weekly swimming lessons, competitive fixtures and outdoor activities, pupils build physical skills, develop confidence and learn the value of perseverance, sportsmanship and collaboration.

We believe physical development is an essential part of a well-rounded education. Alongside academic progress, sport gives every child the opportunity to challenge themselves, work together and experience the enjoyment of being active.

Specialist subjects

At Kneller Hall Junior, we go beyond the basics, offering a rich and varied specialist curriculum that enables pupils to flourish academically, creatively and physically. Our programme is designed to help every child discover their strengths, build confidence and develop the knowledge and skills they need to thrive in their future learning and life.

Life Skills, Personal Development and Co-Curricular Learning

Personal development is an important part of life at Kneller Hall Junior. Our inclusive ethos welcomes children of all backgrounds and abilities, while specialist teaching across subjects including Music, Drama, Art, STEAM, Science, French and PE gives pupils opportunities to develop their interests and talents.

The Dukes Diploma brings this learning to life through five key areas: Character, Critical Thinking, Digital Wisdom, Serving Global Society and Life Skills. Through practical experiences, pupils are encouraged to make thoughtful choices, solve problems, contribute to their community and develop the skills they need for everyday life.

Workshops, clubs, educational visits and residential opportunities in the spring and summer terms further enrich school life, helping pupils develop independence, strengthen relationships and grow in confidence.

Digital Learning

Pupil wellbeing, purpose and ambition remain at the heart of everything we do. Alongside strong academic foundations and traditional teaching, technology is introduced carefully and intentionally to support creativity, collaboration and deeper engagement with learning, while developing pupils’ digital literacy and awareness of online safety.

From Years 3–6, pupils use iPads where they genuinely add value across a range of subjects. They are particularly effective within STEAM lessons, where technology supports design, creativity and problem-solving, allowing pupils to explore ideas in more dynamic and engaging ways.
Technology is used with balance and purpose, helping pupils develop confidence and independence in its use while preserving the importance of hands-on learning, practical experiences and real-world interaction.

Beyond the classroom
