Ready for Senior

Transition to Senior School

Moving up to Kneller Hall Senior School is the natural next step for our Junior pupils.

Preparing pupils for this transition is an important part of life at Kneller Hall Junior. Our approach focuses not only on academic readiness, but also on developing the confidence, independence and resilience that children need to thrive at Kneller Hall Senior School.

Every child’s journey is different. Because we understand each pupil as an individual, we plan their move into Year 7 together with their parents, building on their strengths, interests and ambitions.

NO EXTERNAL 11+

Moving up without the 11+

Pupils at Kneller Hall Junior move up into Year 7 at Kneller Hall Senior School without sitting the external 11+.

Staff monitor progress, attainment and pastoral development throughout the prep years, so by Year 7 they already have a full picture of each child, and their path is planned together with their parents.

The result is that Years 5 and 6 are spent going further rather than preparing for a single morning in November. Encouragement rather than pressure. High achievement without high anxiety.

Pupils joining our Senior School from other schools sit an entrance assessment.

READY, NOT JUST ELIGIBLE

What we prepare them for

Academically.

A broad and balanced curriculum provides pupils with the knowledge and skills needed for senior school study. Through subjects such as English, mathematics, science, languages and the humanities, pupils develop strong academic habits and the ability to think independently. As they move through the upper years, pupils are increasingly encouraged to take responsibility for their learning, preparing them for the expectations of Kneller Hall Senior School.

Practically.

Senior school brings new opportunities and greater independence. Pupils gradually develop the organisational and study skills that support this transition, including managing homework, organising their time and approaching challenges with confidence. Teachers support pupils in building these habits step by step so that they feel well prepared and self-assured when they move up.

Personally.

Alongside their learning, pupils have the opportunity to work towards the Dukes Young Leaders award, a recognition of their growth not just academically but as thoughtful, responsible members of a community.

THE PRACTICAL PART

A confident transition

Above all, our goal is for pupils to move up to Kneller Hall Senior School feeling confident about the next stage of their education. With strong academic foundations, well developed study skills and a supportive school community behind them, pupils are ready to embrace the opportunities that await them in Year 7.

Our staff work closely with parents throughout the process, so the conversation about Year 7 happens with people who know your child well. In Year 6, pupils visit the Senior School and meet the staff who will teach them, so that by September, Year 7 already feels familiar.

FOR EVERY FAMILY

Support at every step

Moving up is a shared journey, and families are part of it from the start. We keep you informed about your child’s progress and readiness throughout the upper years.

For families considering other options, our staff are always happy to offer guidance and support.

HISTORY, CARRIED FORWARD

Two homes, one journey

In September 2027, our Senior School opens its new home on the Kneller Hall estate, and our Junior School moves to Pope’s Villa on Cross Deep, its permanent home by the river. Two homes. One school. A single journey from Reception to the Upper Sixth.
