Honouring the Past. Inspiring the Future.
Heritage and History
Few school settings carry the weight of history that Kneller Hall School does. Three centuries of cultural, artistic and musical excellence have shaped this extraordinary estate.
our heritage
Sir Godfrey Kneller and the Origins of the Estate
The Hall takes its name from Sir Godfrey Kneller, one of the most celebrated portrait painters of his age and Principal Painter to the British Crown under five successive monarchs. He acquired the Twickenham estate in the late seventeenth century and commissioned the construction of the Hall as his family seat. It became a gathering place for the leading figures of Augustan England, and its reputation for culture and distinction was established from the very start.
The Grade II listed building that stands today retains its neo-Jacobean facade, formal gardens and historic chapel; a structure of genuine architectural beauty and profound historical significance.

A musical legacy
The Royal Military School of Music
In 1857, the estate found a remarkable new purpose. The Duke of Cambridge established the Royal Military School of Music at Kneller Hall – the first dedicated military music training institution in the world. For over 160 years, Kneller Hall was the home of British military music: training bandmasters and musicians who served at state occasions and on the world stage. This tradition of excellence is a legacy we are proud to inherit.
Looking ahead
A New Chapter
Dukes Education acquired the Kneller Hall estate with a single, clear purpose: to create a school worthy of it. Reimagined as an ambitious co-educational school for pupils aged 4 to 18, Kneller Hall School combines the character and heritage of its extraordinary past with a forward-looking approach to education. The same conviction that defined this estate for three centuries now shapes everything we do.
